A mobile app is worth building when it removes friction that a website cannot. Push notifications reach a customer without an email being opened. This is the decision clients agonise over most, and the honest answer is that both are correct in different circumstances.
Choose native — Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android — when the app leans hard on the device: continuous background location, heavy camera or video processing, Bluetooth and hardware peripherals, complex widgets, or a demanding graphics layer. Native also wins when you expect the app to live for many years and want the shortest path to each new OS feature.
Choose Flutter or React Native when the app is largely screens, forms, lists and API calls, and you want iOS and Android from one codebase and one team. Most business apps fall here. The saving is real but it is not half the cost: design, backend, QA, store submission and project management are broadly unchanged. Expect a meaningful reduction in the mobile engineering portion, not the whole budget.
There is also a middle route we use often — a cross-platform app with native modules written for the two or three features that genuinely need them. Integrations. Payment gateways, ERP and CRM systems, SMS and WhatsApp providers, government or bank interfaces each carry their own documentation, testing and approval time. Design depth. Applying a clean, conventional interface costs less than a bespoke, heavily animated brand experience. Platform count. iOS only, Android only, or both. Compliance and security requirements. Regulated sectors need penetration testing, audit logging and data-residency decisions. Ongoing support. Budget for it — an unmaintained app degrades within a year as operating systems and SDKs move on.
